Treasury Secretary - And the Winner is...

By: Jann Swanson

President-elect Barack Obama's transition team has announced that he will present his new economic team to the public on Monday.

The media has all but confirmed that the new Secretary of the Treasury will be Timothy F. Geithner, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and, before that, a career Treasury official.

Geithner was the favorite in the betting pool in U.S. News and World Report in an article we quoted from in reviewing the Secretary candidates early in the week.  The magazine quoted 2 to 1 odds on his selection.

One reason he was favored was because he has been functioning as the point person for the Federal Reserve in responding to the economic crisis.

Geithner is the youngest of the candidates, younger by far than such possibilities as Paul Volker and Warren Buffet.  At 46 he is the same age as President-elect Obama.
