The Day Ahead: Bond Markets Closed, Some Data Postponed
Just about the only thing that remains on the calendar for today will be the 900am release of S&P Case Shiller Home Prices. The Conference Board announced that the Consumer Confidence Report would be rescheduled for Thursday Nov 1 and markets in general are completely closed until Wednesday. In their release, SIFMA noted that staffing would be up to the discretion of dealers saying:
"primary dealers will need to determine if they intend to provide limited staffing on funding desks on Tuesday, October 30, in order to accommodate any potential open-market operations by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York." -SIFMA News Release
In a related statement the NY Fed noted:
"The purchase of Treasury securities previously scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, has been postponed, and the schedule of Treasury security operations will be updated in the coming days with details of the rescheduled operation. Treasury purchase and sale operations are anticipated to resume on Wednesday, October 31. Similarly, there will be no agency mortgage-backed securities (MBS) trading on Tuesday, October 30. MBS trading operations are anticipated to resume on Wednesday, October 31." -NY Fed Statement
In other words, bond markets are definitively closed on Tuesday. Far more important than the Case Shiller data, is the safety and well-being of everyone affected by the storm. We'll strive to post any pertinent updates here, but do not have scheduled "Mid-Day" and "Recap" notes due to the market closure.
